The Hard-V refers to the neck profile (i.e. the shape of the back side of the neck). It works well for a player who keeps his thumb in the center of the back of the neck. For players who prefer a firmer grip, the "point" of the V also fits nicely in the V created by the thumb and index finger. The Hard-V profile looks similar to the graphic below.
